Plot and Setting: "When No One Is Watching" by Alyssa Cole is a suspenseful thriller that brings the unsettling effects of gentrification to life in a Brooklyn neighborhood. Sydney Green, the protagonist, observes her community's rapid changes as familiar faces vanish and wealthy new residents take over. This depiction of gentrification is not just a backdrop but a central theme that resonates deeply with urban communities experiencing similar transformations.
Character Development:
Sydney Green: The emotional attachment to Sydney is somewhat inconsistent for me. While her personal struggle is heavy and engaging, there’s a lack of depth regarding her past self that other characters might miss. Meaning, I had this yearning to know who she was before her trauma, to miss her along with the others around her. This gap is partially filled by reader assumptions and projections, but more direct insight from Sydney or her neighbors that were still around would enhance the emotional impact. Her best friend was a great opportunity to bring more of those types of scenes to live, but that fell short.
Theo: Theo provides a valuable alternate perspective. His growth from a new resident to an ally in Sydney’s investigation is mostly well-developed. His character highlights the complexities of gentrifiers who struggle with their role in the displacement of long-time residents. Although I audibly sighed at his increased importance to the story, he was very valuable to the plot, and I grew to root for him.
Antagonists: The antagonists’ dialogue occasionally feels exaggerated, which can detract from the tension. However, this choice seems intentional to emphasize their character and the absurdity of their actions, adding a layer of critique to the narrative. The antagonist is direct and indirect, meaning the antagonists is meant to be a “type” of people being represented by specific people in this story. One gentrifier causes harm just like the rest, intentional or not. They did their job well at making me hate them.
Pacing and Plot Development: The pacing fluctuates, with some parts feeling dragged and others moving too quickly. This can build anticipation but sometimes leaves the reader feeling unrewarded. Sydney and Theo’s investigation is compelling, rating an 8.5 out of 10. However, it could have delved deeper into uncovering the true perpetrators to provide a more satisfying climax. To be frank if she went on this journey with her best friend as opposed to Theo, I would have been more invested just by the contrast of personalities opposed to backgrounds.
Real-World Context: The novel effectively mirrors real-world gentrification issues, such as those documented in cities like San Francisco and New York. Studies show that gentrification often leads to displacement, increased property values, and a loss of community identity. Cole's portrayal of Sydney's neighborhood captures this tension, illustrating the social and economic pressures that drive long-time residents away.
Strengths:
Storyline with the mom: Sydney’s relationship with her ill mother is a poignant subplot that adds depth to her character and drives her determination to stay in the neighborhood. This storyline highlights the personal stakes involved in the broader issue of gentrification. If the story was only about the obstacles with the mom, it would still carry, it was extremely grasping.
Historical Walking Tour: The walking tour is an effective narrative device that could have been used more to provide dialogue and insights into the community’s feelings. This would have deepened the reader’s understanding of the neighborhood’s history and the impact of gentrification.
Final Thoughts: I would definitely recommend this book to fans of low-key thrillers. It may not challenge your perceptions more than reality already does, but it offers a great story with a meaningful message and intriguing characters. If you’re interested in gentrification and the stories of those affected by it, this book is worth a read, and Alyssa Cole is definitely an author to support. It earns a seat on the thriller must read for 2024.
